TEACHER
APPRECIATION: In
the fall, members bake cookies that are distributed to St. Paul and
Highland Schools, including the centers, to say “thank you” to our
educators.
CHRISTMAS
SHARING: The club
“adopts” a needy local family and nursing home residents without any
family. A committee shops for gifts, wraps and delivers them in time for
Christmas.
PEANUT
BUTTER & JAM FESTIVAL:
This is a city sponsored event held on Fridays during the summer
on the downtown square. The club has a fishpond during this event for
children to win prizes for a small donation.
BABYSITTING
CLINIC:
This is a fundamental course in babysitting held under the
direction of the club. It features guest speakers, instruction on
sitting, first aid & safety, and real babies. The cost is free for
participants.
BINGO: Several times a year, a committee coordinates a night of
bingo at an area nursing home. The committee members bring cookies and
the club provides the drink and prizes. The residents enjoy the presence
of the children of participating members.
STORY
HOUR: This
program is held in the summer in conjunction with the Latzer Library
Summer Reading Program. It consists of a one hour program with stories,
snacks, movie and/or a craft following a theme selected by the library
staff.
BLOOD
DRIVE: We sponsor a blood drive once or twice a year.
RELAY
FOR LIFE: Our club participates in our local Relay for Life.
SOCIAL
EVENTS
We
have several events scheduled thru-out the year that are simply social,
a way to get to know each other and our spouses better.
CHRISTMAS
AUCTION: This is
an event held in December at our regular meeting.
However, we try to keep actual business to a minimum. Each member
brings a dessert or appetizer and a craft or some other item to be
auctioned off among the members. Proceeds
go to the general fund to be used for postage, hostess supplies, etc.
ROAD
RALLY/SCAVENGER HUNT:
This is an event for members and their guests.
A committee plans a scavenger hunt throughout the town, ending at
a surprise location with munchies and drinks.
PROGRESSIVE
DINNER: For this
social night, one member hosts appetizers at her home.
Couples then break up into groups for dinner.
The entire group meets again at another member’s home for
desserts. Appetizers and
desserts are assigned to each couple by the chairman, and the expense of
the dinner is shared by the couples in each dinner group.
AWARDS
AND INSTALLATION BANQUET: This
event is the last meeting of the year and is usually held in May. Awards are given for member’s participation in
various activities throughout the year. Installation of incoming
officers is also held at this time.
PARADES:
The club participates in one or two Highland parades per year. One
parade is held in conjunction with the Schweizerfest in June.
The other is the Christmas Parade held the Friday after
Thanksgiving.
CRAZY
BOWL:
The name says it all. This is a fun evening of unusual bowling
among
members, friends, and families for a small cost per person.
This is used as a fund-raiser for our Relay For Life team.
BOOK
CLUB: Members
meet monthly to discuss a previously chosen book.
Books of all genres are read. Members are enlightened by
conversation of many subjects.
FRIENDSHIP
BASKETS:
Members sign up to participate in this activity. Baskets
are passed from one member to another based on a prearranged
schedule. A member receives
a basket full of goodies one month, takes it home, and brings it filled
with goodies to give to the next member on the schedule at the next
meeting. The items can be baked goods, crafts, etc. The suggested cost
of the contents is $10.00 - $15.00.
BACK
ROOM BUDDIES:
Don’t forget, after the meeting a few members can usually be found
enjoying a beverage at a local watering hole!
